Cet article aborde les récents débats concernant la décision de l'Église d'établir un accord avec la Chine, en se concentrant sur la protestation du 9 janvier 2020 du cardinal Zen, évêque émérite de Hong Kong, contre l'accord provisoire entre le Vatican et la Chine. L'article se penche sur l'histoire de l'évangélisation en Chine, en soulignant le rôle important de Matteo Ricci et les débats controversés qui ont suivi sur les rites chinois. Il examine l'arrivée des missionnaires vincentiens en Chine et les défis rencontrés lors de la visite apostolique du cardinal de Tournon, qui visait à mettre en œuvre les décisions romaines sur les rites chinois. L'article aborde les questions complexes de l'inculturation, en soulignant les difficultés d'intégration des enseignements chrétiens dans les pratiques culturelles chinoises. Il souligne la nécessité d'un dialogue respectueux et d'une gestion prudente des différences culturelles dans le travail missionnaire, en tirant les leçons des expériences historiques pour guider les futurs efforts d'évangélisation.
