Este artículo aborda los recientes debates en torno a la decisión de la Iglesia de establecer un acuerdo con China, centrándose en la protesta del 9 de enero de 2020 del cardenal Zen, obispo emérito de Hong Kong, contra el acuerdo provisional entre el Vaticano y China. El documento profundiza en la historia de la evangelización en China, destacando el importante papel de Matteo Ricci y los posteriores debates polémicos sobre los ritos chinos. Examina la llegada de los misioneros vicencianos a China y los retos a los que se enfrentó durante la visita apostólica del cardenal de Tournon, que pretendía aplicar las decisiones romanas sobre los ritos chinos. El documento analiza las complejas cuestiones de la inculturación, destacando las dificultades de integrar las enseñanzas cristianas con las prácticas culturales chinas. Subraya la necesidad de un diálogo respetuoso y de una cuidadosa navegación por las diferencias culturales en la labor misionera, extrayendo lecciones de las experiencias históricas para orientar los futuros esfuerzos de evangelización.
