La pertinence du thème de la compassion et de la miséricorde a été renouvelée en particulier par les gestes et les attitudes du Pape qui reflètent la grande compassion de Dieu. En instituant la célébration de la Journée mondiale des pauvres, le pape nous invite à diffuser et à institutionnaliser ces gestes et ces attitudes, car la réponse de Dieu aux pauvres est toujours un acte salvateur qui guérit les blessures du corps et de l'âme. Le pape considère ses catéchèses, audiences, voyages apostoliques, vœux, rencontres diplomatiques, apostoliques et interreligieuses, discours et prières pour les victimes de la guerre, homélies et conférences de presse comme autant d'occasions d'inciter le monde à la compassion et de rappeler que la miséricorde de Dieu est éternelle. Son approche de la compassion et de la miséricorde, c'est-à-dire une approche dans la perspective du Samaritain miséricordieux, a pour but d'approfondir et d'intensifier notre réponse à la vocation missionnaire et compatissante à la suite de Jésus-Christ, l'évangélisateur des pauvres.
