La actualidad del tema de la compasión y la misericordia se ha renovado especialmente a través de los gestos y actitudes del Papa que reflejan la gran compasión de Dios. Al establecer la celebración de la Jornada Mundial de los Pobres, el Papa nos invita a difundir e institucionalizar tales gestos y actitudes, ya que la respuesta de Dios a los pobres es siempre un acto salvífico que cura las heridas del cuerpo y del alma. El Papa considera sus catequesis, audiencias, viajes apostólicos, saludos, encuentros diplomáticos, apostólicos e interreligiosos, discursos y oraciones por las víctimas de la guerra, homilías y ruedas de prensa como oportunidades para mover al mundo a la compasión y recordar que la misericordia de Dios es eterna. Su enfoque de la compasión y la misericordia, es decir, un enfoque desde la perspectiva del samaritano misericordioso, pretende profundizar e intensificar nuestra respuesta a la vocación misionera y compasiva en el seguimiento de Jesucristo, el Evangelizador de los pobres.
