Cette étude examinera la miséricorde dans les lettres, les conférences et les œuvres de Vincent. Elle se déroulera en trois étapes. Tout d'abord, pour servir de toile de fond à l'enseignement de Vincent, elle analysera brièvement ce que les écritures hébraïques et chrétiennes disent de la miséricorde. Deuxièmement, il présentera l'enseignement de Vincent sur ce sujet, en soulignant ce qu'il a dit et fait. Enfin, nous situerons cet enseignement dans le contexte actuel de l'Eglise et de la Famille vincentienne. L'enseignement de Vincent sur la miséricorde peut être résumé en six points: 1) La miséricorde comme trait distinctif de Dieu; 2) La miséricorde de Dieu envers nous; 3) L'importance des œuvres de miséricorde corporelles et spirituelles; 4) La miséricorde et la justice; 5) Les obstacles à l'accomplissement des œuvres de miséricorde; et 6) Marie comme Mère de la Miséricorde. Vincent a souligné l'importance des œuvres de miséricorde corporelles et spirituelles. Il a insisté sur le fait que la libération que Jésus a proclamée aux pauvres était holistique et intégrale. Par conséquent, il a envoyé des Filles de la Charité pour s'occuper des pauvres "spirituellement et corporellement".
