Este estudio examinará la misericordia en las cartas, conferencias y obras de Vicente. Procederá en tres pasos. En primer lugar, como trasfondo de la enseñanza de Vicente, analizará brevemente lo que dicen las Escrituras hebreas y cristianas sobre la misericordia. En segundo lugar, presentará la enseñanza de Vicente sobre ese tema, destacando lo que dijo e hizo. En tercer lugar, situará esta enseñanza en el contexto actual de la Iglesia y de la Familia Vicenciana. La doctrina de Vicente sobre la misericordia puede resumirse en seis apartados: 1) La misericordia como rasgo distintivo de Dios; 2) La misericordia de Dios hacia nosotros; 3) La importancia de las obras de misericordia corporales y espirituales; 4) Misericordia y justicia; 5) Obstáculos para realizar las obras de misericordia; y 6) María como Madre de Misericordia. Vicente subrayó la importancia de las obras de misericordia corporales y espirituales. Insistió en que la liberación que Jesús proclamó a los pobres era holística e integral. En consecuencia, envió a las Hijas de la Caridad a atender a los pobres "espiritual y corporalmente".
