Abstract

This article examines Saint Vincent de Paul as a committed person of a just and legitimate peace amid the violent conflicts of seventeenth-century Europe. Although the term “peace” appears infrequently in Vincent’s writings, the study demonstrates that peace was central to his spirituality, pastoral action, and theological vision. Living in an era marked by religious wars, civil unrest, and widespread social misery, Vincent understood peace primarily as a spiritual good rooted in conversion of heart, prayer, and charity. Rejecting naïve pacifism, he drew upon Scripture and the tradition of Augustine and Thomas Aquinas to affirm a peace grounded in justice, mercy, and defense of the poor. His “just war” was the tireless struggle to protect the most vulnerable, both through concrete works of charity and courageous appeals to political and ecclesial authorities. The article highlights Vincent’s conviction that true peace begins within the human heart and radiates outward to society, making prayer, conscience formation, and solidarity indispensable paths toward authentic and lasting peace.
