Paul Sou, le premier prêtre chinois de la Congrégation de la Mission, se distingue dans l'histoire des missionnaires vincentiens chinois, souvent éclipsés par leurs homologues européens. Contrairement à beaucoup d'autres, la vie et les contributions de Paul Sou sont bien documentées dans divers journaux et lettres. Né en 1692 à Guangdong, il a été baptisé à l'âge de 8 ans par le Père Appiani. Bien qu'il se soit éloigné de l'Église, il a renoué avec elle grâce à l'influence de Müllener. Son parcours de missionnaire a été confronté à de nombreux défis, de la controverse sur les rites chinois à la persécution sous le décret de l'empereur Kangxi. Le travail missionnaire de Sou s'est étendu à plusieurs régions, dont le Sichuan et le Huguang, où il a dû faire face à l'emprisonnement, à la torture et à une hostilité persistante. Malgré ces difficultés, il a établi une communauté chrétienne durable, s'est engagé dans un travail pastoral et a formé les futurs membres du clergé. Son dévouement s'est poursuivi jusqu'à sa retraite à Macao, où il s'est concentré sur l'éducation des jeunes chrétiens. L'héritage de Paul Sou témoigne de sa foi inébranlable et de l'esprit durable des premiers missionnaires chrétiens en Chine.
