El rey Luis XVI refunda la misión francesa en Pekín

La supresión de los jesuitas en 1773 por el Papa Clemente XIV provocó el cierre de numerosas instituciones jesuitas y la expulsión de jesuitas de todo el mundo, lo que afectó a sus influyentes misiones en China. Durante los 65 años de ausencia de los jesuitas, otras órdenes católicas, como los franciscanos y los dominicos, prosiguieron sus esfuerzos de evangelización. El Superior General de los Lazaristas, a petición del rey de Francia, había elegido rápidamente a tres miembros de la Congrégation de la Mission para ir a China: uno de ellos se había especializado en astronomía y geografía: el Sr. Raux Jean-Joseph. Apoyada por los monarcas franceses, en particular Luis XIV y más tarde Luis XVI, la influencia francesa siguió siendo fuerte en las misiones católicas de China, y algunos jesuitas permanecieron en la corte imperial china debido a su pericia en ciencias, como la astronomía y las matemáticas. Estos misioneros jesuitas aprovecharon sus conocimientos para fomentar relaciones favorables con los emperadores chinos, contribuyendo a los intercambios diplomáticos y culturales. Tras el restablecimiento de la Compañía de Jesús en 1814, los jesuitas regresaron a China, donde reanudaron su labor misionera en medio de la evolución de las relaciones franco-chinas. Los crecientes intereses políticos y comerciales de Francia en China siguieron entrelazándose con su papel de protectora de las misiones católicas hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX.
