Pope Francis is always mindful of the value of communication. He is aware of the fact that there is a need to avoid a form of communication that is simply instrumental and that does not contribute to the development and strengthening of the community. We need to recognize how social networks, on the one hand, help us to better connect, rediscover, and assist one another. In Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis also refers to the theme of technology but focuses on the need to be attentive to this matter. We can have good technology and new updated mobile devices; we can have excellent internet connections, and yet all of those realities do not guarantee good communication. In fact, with all of those factors in place we could still be isolated: Today we can recognize that “we fed ourselves on dreams of splendor and grandeur, and ended up consuming distraction, insularity and solitude” (FT, 33). T he encyclical also reminds us of the reality that in order to accomplish our mission in an effective manner, we must enter into a dynamic of true dialogue; that is, dialogue within our community, dialogue with reality, and dialogue with the poor whom we serve.
