No Price for Grace: Canonical Reflections on Mass Offerings and the Poor

In the evolving context of how the Church administers the sacraments, a profound question arises again regarding the practice of Mass offerings, especially in light of the decree issued by the Dicastery for the Clergy in April 2025. Cc. 848 and 945 §2 emphasize justice and generosity in accepting Mass intentions, particularly from the poor. How are we to respond pastorally to those who truly cannot make an offering? This question is especially relevant to us Vincentians, who, since the founding contract of the Congregation of the Mission on April 17, 1625, have been committed to serving freely, in order to freely share the gifts we ourselves have received from the generous hand of God. As disciples of Saint Vincent, is this a moment to reaffirm our identity or a challenge to remain faithful to the founding spirit of our mission?
